12-step program 12-step programA form of treatment, used initially by those who abuse alcohol or other substances, that relies on social support, interpersonal motivation, abstinence from the addictive substance, and spirituality. Over 200 self-help organizations employ 12-step principles for recovery. These include compulsions for gambling, hoarding of food, and sex.
