Hirsch Hans

Born Dec. 27, 1878, in Zwettl; died Aug. 20, 1940, in Vienna. Austrian historian; specialist in medieval political and legal history. Coeditor of Monumenta Germaniae Historica (from 1903); professor at universities in Prague (from 1918) and Vienna (from 1926); director of the Austrian Institute of Historical Research in Vienna (from 1929).

Hirsch, in investigating the question of immunity in the Holy Roman Empire during the 11th-13th centuries, came to the conclusion that the main source for the formation of the German territorial principalities was the power held by the Vögte in the estates of the monasteries that had been reformed by the Cluny movement.
