The biological significance of hippuric acid synthesis in the body is in the binding of benzoic acid, which is liberated during the destruction of the aromatic compounds that are a part of the makeup of plant tissues. In clinical practice the liver’s detoxication ability is measured by a test for hippuric acid synthesis (Quick’s test).
