Hauch, Johannes Carsten

 

Born May 12, 1790, in Fred-rikshald, Norway; died Mar. 4, 1872, in Rome. Danish romantic writer.

In addition to lyric poetry, Hauch wrote the historical novels Vilhelm Zabern (1834) and The Alchemist (1836) and the ballad cycle Valdemar Atterdag (1861). The novel A Polish Family (1839) dealt with the Polish Uprising of 1830–31. Hauch’s fairy tale-play The Sisters From Kinnekulle (1849) makes use of the traditions of Danish folklore.
