Hippocrates of Chios

 

Lived in the second half of the fifth century B.C. Ancient Greek geometer and author of the first systematic work on geometry (not preserved), which probably embraced the material of the first four books of Euclid’s Elements. In the course of seeking a solution to the problem of squaring the circle, Hippocrates of Chios found the quadratures of the three so-called Hippocratic lunes.
