Gwilt, Joseph

(gwĭlt), 1784–1863, British architect, archaeologist, and writer, known chiefly for his Encyclopaedia of Architecture, Historical, Theoretical, and Practical (8 vol., 1842). Among his other books are Sciography; or, Examples of Shades and Shadows, with Rules for Their Projection (1822); an edition of Sir William ChambersChambers, Sir William,
1723–96, English architect, b. Gothenburg, Sweden. He traveled extensively in the East Indies and in China making drawings of gardens and buildings, many of which were later published.
