Holy Cross Day

(Russian, vozdvizhenie; literally, raising), one of the Christian holidays. According to church tradition, it was established in memory of the discovery (on the outskirts of Jerusalem) of the cross on which legend says Christ was crucified, as well as of the “raising” of the cross for worship by the believers. Evidently this holiday originated in the sixth century; it is celebrated in September.
