Gwathmey, Charles

(1938–2009)A founding partner of Gwathmey Siegel and Associates. With Peter Eisenman, Michael Graves, John Hejduk, and Richard Meier, Gwathmey was one of the New York Five— self-proclaimed rethinkers of Corbusian Modernism— who produced the 1972 publication Five Architects. Gwathmey’s residential client list included Steven Spielberg, David Geffen, Jerry Seinfeld, and Jeffrey Katzenberg, and his design style was labeled High Modernist. The firm’s many prominent large projects included the International Center of Photography in NYC, the Museum of the Moving Image in Queens, and a 1992 addition to the Guggenheim Museum, in NYC.
