Grazhdanin

(The Citizen), a Russian political and literary newspaper-journal. Published in St. Petersburg from 1872 to 1914 (with a gap in 1880–81).

Grazhdanin was founded by Prince V. P. Meshcherskii. It came out weekly or twice a week and. from 1887 to 1914, daily. Grazhdanin influenced government policy to some degree. It was of a monarchist orientation and opposed the progressive press and the revolutionary movement. F. M. Dostoevsky edited Grazhdanin from early 1873 to April 1874 (beginning in 1873 he published Diary of a Writer in it). In this period, K. P. Pobedonostsev (later chief procurator of the Synod) worked on Grazhdanin, as did N. N. Strakhov in the criticism and bibliographical department. At various times. Grazhdanin printed the works of such writers as A. F. Pisemskii, N. S. Leskov, F. I. Tiutchev, A. N. Maikov, Ia. P. Polonskii, A. N. Apukhtin, and Vas. I. Nemirovich-Danchenko.
