This form of thyroid gland inflammation affects mostly middle-aged women and is an AUTOIMMUNE disorder, due to attack by antibodies mainly to the protein thyroglobulin produced by the gland. Other antibodies are also present. The resulting inflammation causes pain and sometimes difficulty in swallowing from gland enlargement. There is reduced output of thyroid hormone (thyroxine) and replacement therapy may be needed. A short course of steroids is also effective.
