for research into the mechanism of chemical reactions. Hinshelwood used ideas generated by Semyonov to unravel the reaction that produces water. This reaction of hydrogen and oxygen is so fundamental that Hinshelwood's conclusions opened up a broad array of new research pathways in organic and inorganic chemistry.
