Hinnöya

Hinnöya

 

an island in the Norwegian Sea, off the northwestern coast of Norway, to which it belongs. Hinnöya has an area of 2,198 sq km and elevations up to 1,266 m. The island is composed primarily of granites and gneisses. The coast is heavily dissected by fjords. Hinnöya has meadows, heaths, tundra areas, and elfin forests containing birch trees. There is fishing. Industry includes ship repair. The port of Harstad is on Hinnöya.
