释义 | Guyot, ArnoldGuyot, Arnold (Henry)(1807–84) geographer, natural scientist; born in Boudevilliers, Switzerland. A pioneer in the study of Alpine glaciation, in 1848 he traveled to the U.S.A. to give lectures at the Lowell Institute, published as The Earth and Man (1849). In 1854, he joined the faculty of the College of New Jersey (later known as Princeton University). Also knowledgeable in meteorology and topography, he founded the U.S. weather station system and measured the altitudes of the Applachian mountains from Maine to South Carolina. |
