Hesburgh, Theodore

Hesburgh, Theodore (Martin)

(1917– ) clergyman, university president; born in Syracuse, N.Y. An ordained Roman Catholic priest, Hesburgh became indelibly identified with Notre Dame University, where he was president (1952–87) in a term that secularized and integrated the university and brought the athletic department under administrative control. He was a charter member of the Civil Rights Commission (1957–72).
