Hutzul Horse
Hutzul Horse
a local pack and riding horse of the mountainous part of the western regions of the Ukrainian SSR (principally the Transcarpathian region). The Hutzul horse is short and sturdily built, and it is distinguished for its strong constitution, fertility, and longevity; it is capable of regaining weight rapidly in pastures. It is a hardy worker. In harness a pair of Hutzul horses readily haul up to 25 centners of load; they may traverse up to 100 km per day of narrow mountain paths under a load of 100–150 kg. Breeding work done with Hutzul horses is directed toward strengthening them by means of pure-breeding and cross-breeding with heavy coach horses and Arabian stallions. Hutzul horses are also common in Rumania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, and Austria.
