Born Feb. 1, 1860, in Duisburg; died July 8, 1930, in Belgershein, near Leipzig. German linguist and Indo-Europeanist. Professor at the University of Leipzig from 1896 to 1926. Studied the languages of the so-called Balkan linguistic community. He was the author of PracticalGrammar of the Rumanian Language (1903), Grammar of the Bulgarian Language (1907), and Grammar of the Spanish Language (1922). He compiled the Bulgarian-German Dictionary (1913) and the Albanian-German and German-Albanian Dictionary (1914).
