In western IA, east of Sioux City; established Jan 15, 1851 from Cherokee County. Name Origin: For Mt. Ida of Greek myth; either the one in Crete or the one near ancient Troy (in present-day Turkey). The name was suggested by Eliphalet Price to connect the old classic civilization of Europe with the new civilization of the plains. Other sources say the county is named for the first white child born in the community (July 19, 1856), Ida Smith, daughter of Edwin Smith, a trapper
