Armeev Burial Ground
Armeev Burial Ground
dating to the seventh and eighth centuries, located near the village of Armeevo, Shemysheika Raion, Penza Oblast, RSFSR. It was excavated by P. S. Rykov in the years 1926–27. The dead lay stretched out on their backs with heads pointing south, in shrouds of rough canvas wound with or covered by bast. The contents of the burial ground (ornaments, tools, dishes) were similar to those found in the Oka River area (Riazan’) burial grounds. Apparently, the Armeev burial ground belonged to the ancestors of the Mordvins.
