Htin Kyaw
(tĭn chô), 1946–, Burmese political leader, grad. Rangoon Univ. (1968, 1975). He served in the ministries of industry (1975–1980) and planning and treasury (1980–92) before resigning from government service. A member of the National League for Democracy (NLD), he spent time in prison in 2000 and became a senior aide to NLD leader Aung San Suu KyiAung San Suu Kyi, 1945–, Burmese political leader, B.A. Oxford, 1969, Ph.D. Univ. of London, 1985. The daughter of assassinated (1947) nationalist general U Aung San, who is regarded as the founder of modern Myanmar, she lived outside the country after 1960.

In 2016, after the NLD's electoral landslide in 2015 and with Suu Kyi barred from the presidency of Myanmar, he was elected to the office, becoming the first civilian to serve since the 1962 military coup. Largely a figurehead, with real power concentrated in Suu Kyi as state counselor, he resigned in 2018.
