Gunung Leuser
the largest wildlife preserve in Indonesia, located in the province of Atjeh on the island of Sumatra. Its area totals 416,500 hectares. The preserve was created in 1934 for the conservation of the areas inhabited by the Sumatran rhinoceros and orangutan. The Malaysian tiger is also found in Gunung Leuser. There are numerous species of ungulates and birds. Picturesque landscapes are also preserved, as are uncoverings of rocks in the vicinity of the highest point of northern Sumatra—Mount Leuser (3,466 m).
