Hypertrophy, Regenerative

a mode of regeneration distinctive of the internal organs of animals. The part of an organ left after amputation enlarges as a result of cell division (hyperplasia), and the size of the cells increases (hypertrophy). Hence, the size and function of the organ are restored, but the shape remains distorted.
