Husayn Bihzād

 

Born 1895, in Isfahan. Persian artist.

From the age of seven, Bihzād studied under a master of pencil-case painting. Afterward, he studied under the artist M. Paykar. At age 17 he opened his own studio. He studied art in Europe and the USA. His early works were executed in the style of the old miniaturists, and his later works reflect the influence of European (primarily French) art. His major works are illustrations to Nizami’s Khamsa and the works of Omar Khayyam, Rahimī, and other authors; and pictures on subjects from Firdausi’s Shah Nama, themes from the life of Avicenna, and so forth.
