Granular Venereal Disease of Cattle

infectious follicular vestibulitis, a chronic disease characterized by suppurative-catarrhal inflammation of the mucous membrane of the vagina in cows and of the prepuce in bulls. The causative agent of the disease has not been conclusively determined. Young animals suffer from the disease more often than adults. Infection occurs during mating and through infected litter and objects used to care for the animals. The latent period varies from 20 hours to ten days. The course runs two to four weeks. The disease inflicts substantial economic losses. Treatment is symptomatic. Prevention involves observance of the hygienic rules for maintaining animals. The diseased animals are isolated and treated, and their stalls are disinfected.
