Hurtado de Mendoza, Diego

(dyā`gō o͞ortä`dhō dā māndō`thä), 1503—75, Spanish poet, historian, and statesman, b. Granada. An ambassador of Charles V to England and Venice and at the Council of Trent, he was banished by Philip II to Granada from 1568 to 1574. There he wrote his famous history of the Moorish rebellion, Guerra de Granada, which was not printed until the 17th cent. He wrote poetry, especially elegies and epistles, in the traditional manner. The picaresque novel Lazarillo de Tormes (1554) has been attributed to him.
