[′gəlf ¦strēm ′kau̇nt·ər‚kə·rənt] (oceanography) A surface current opposite to the Gulf Stream, one current component on the Sargasso Sea side and the other component much weaker, on the inshore side. A predicted, but as yet unobserved, large current deep under the Gulf Stream but opposite to it.
