Harmel, Pierre
Born Mar. 16, 1911, in Uccle, a suburb of Brussels. Belgian statesman. Graduated from the faculty of law of the University of Liege. Professor at that university.
After World War II, Harmel was one of the leaders of the Walloon wing of the Christian Social Party. He became a deputy to parliament in 1946. From 1950 to 1954 he was minister of education; between 1958 and 1961 he occupied by turn the posts of minister of justice, culture, and state institutions. He was prime minister from 1965 to 1966. In March 1966 he became minister of foreign affairs.
