Granicus

(now Biga or Çan-çay), a river in Turkey flowing into the Sea of Marmara; site of the first great battle between Macedonian troops (30,000 infantry and 5.000 cavalry) and the Persian army (30,000–40,000 infantry and cavalry) during Alexander the Great’s eastern campaign in 334 B.C . Through cavalry attacks Alexander broke up both flanks of the first line of the Persian battle formation and then surrounded and destroyed the Greek mercenaries of the second line (about 10,000 men). With this victory Alexander occupied all of Asia Minor.
