Grand Teton National Park

(tētŏn`, tē`tŏn), 309,993 acres (125,503 hectares), NW Wyo.; est. 1929. The park, which includes Jackson Lake and part of Jackson Hole, embraces the most scenic portion of the glaciated, snow-covered Teton Range; Grand Teton (13,766 ft/4,196 m) is the highest peak. The Snake River flows through the park, which is dotted with small lakes and has several glaciers, forests, and a great variety of wildlife. Hiking, floating down the Snake on rafts, camping, and mountain climbing are popular activities in the park. Fur trapping thrived until the 1840s. Established: Established on February 26, 1929.
Location:In northwestern Wyoming, just north of Jackson and south of Yellowstone National Park. Accesible via US 26/287 from the east, US 26/89 or 191 from the south, and US 89 or 191/287 from the north.
Facilities:Campgrounds (é), picnic area, rest rooms (é), cabin rental, lodging, groceries, restaurant/snacks, boat rental, boat ramp, visitor centers (é), museum/exhibit, self-guided tour/trail. Entrance fee required.
Activities:Camping, hiking, horseback riding, mountain climbing, swimming, boating, fishing, wildlife viewing, auto touring, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, guided tours, educational programs.
Special Features:The most impressive part of the Teton Range, this series of blue-gray peaks rising more than a mile above the sagebrush flats and pristine lakes was once a noted landmark for Indians and "mountain men." The park includes part of Jackson Hole, winter feeding ground of the largest American elk herd.
