Gukovskii, Aleksei Isaevich

 

Born Nov. 26. (Dec. 8), 1895, in Odessa; died Mar. 5, 1969, in Moscow. Soviet historian; professor (1940); doctor of historical sciences (1939). Born into the family of a physician.

Gukovskii graduated from the law department of Moscow University in 1918 and the history department of the Institute of the Red Professoriat (1925). From 1921 to 1957 he taught the history of the USSR in higher educational institutions in Moscow, Gorky, and Vologda. He is the author of widely distributed textbooks (Phases of Social Development, 1926, 1928, four editions in all; Slave-owning Society, 1931, 1932; and History of the Middle Ages, 1935, 1936, 1937). His basic works are on the history of the Civil War and military intervention in Soviet Russia and on the study of source materials for the history of Russia in the era of imperialism.
