hy·per·pro·lac·ti·ne·mi·a (hī'pĕr-prō-lak'ti-nē'mē-ă) Elevated levels of prolactin in the blood; a normal physiologic reaction during lactation, but pathologic otherwise; often due to physical or emotional stress or rapid weight loss, sometimes to pituitary adenoma; amenorrhea is usually present. Synonym(s): hyperprolactinaemia. hyperprolactinaemia Excessive levels in the blood of the pituitary hormone PROLACTIN. Very high levels suggest a pituitary tumour, but abnormal levels may be caused by oestrogens, kidney failure and various drugs. |
