grandfather method grandfather method a procedure for estimating the amount of RECOMBINATION between X-linked genes in an individual that depends on the arrangement of genes in the maternal grandfather. For example, if a mother is known to be heterozygous her genes could be in COUPLING or in repulsion. However, this uncertainty can be removed if the phenotype of her father is known since he has only one X-chromosome. Thus if he was Ab, his heterozygous daughter must be Ab/aB, so ensuring that her children are properly identified as parental or recombinant type (see GENETIC LINKAGE). |
