Established: 1989.
Location:Central Louisiana, 15 miles southwest of Alexandria.
Facilities:Visitor contact station, viewing sites, hiking trails.
Activities:Canoeing, fishing, crawfishing, hiking, hunting, educational programs.
Special Features:Refuge was once part of the large, contiguous Mississippi River bottomland hardwood forest. Today, much of the land is in the process of being reforested.
Habitats: 6,077-acre basin, with forest, cropland, wetlands, moist soil, and open water.
Access: Open daylight hours year round.
Wild life: Migratory waterfowl, shorebirds such as spotted sandpiper, great blue herons, egrets, as well as white-tailed deer, raccoon, river otter, beavers, nutria and rabbits. Peregrine falcon and bald eagles have also been known to use the refuge.
