Hsinyang

 

a city in China, in Honan Province, situated on the Shih River. Population, 300,000 (1972). An iron-ore mining center, Hsinyang also has food-processing enterprises.

Excavations conducted in 1957–58 at Ch’angt’aikuan, near Hsinyang, revealed burials dating from the fifth and fourth centuries B.C. In addition to ceramic and bronze vessels, four categories of objects were found: musical instruments, including drums, a set of bronze bells, and 25-string lutes; writing implements, including a brush and tools for preparing wooden writing tablets; boards with inscriptions executed in india ink; and lacquered wooden articles. The finds are valuable for studying the material culture and the social, religious, and intellectual life of the Ch’u state of the middle of the first millennium B.C.
