[′härd ri‚tərn] (computer science) A control code that is entered into a document by pressing the enter key.

hard return

A code inserted into text to represent the end of the line (end of paragraph) by pressing the Enter key. If the hard return does not display as a symbol on screen, it can sometimes be revealed along with other layout codes in an expanded mode. Contrast with soft return. See line break.
