Herd Horse Breeding

a method of raising horses based on the pasturing of herds. The method is developed in regions with extensive natural pastures, principally in South America, Asia, and Australia. In the USSR it is used principally in the Altai Krai, Astrakhan Oblast, Chita Oblast, the Buriat ASSR, Kalmyk ASSR, Yakut ASSR, Bashkir ASSR, Kazakh SSR, and some areas of Middle Asia. There are two forms of herd horse breeding—year-round pasturing and the stable-pasture system, in which the herd is pastured in summer and is kept indoors in winter. Year-round pasturing is used in raising workhorses and in raising stock for the production of koumiss and meat. The stable-pasture system is used for purebreds, horses for sports, and workhorses.
