guidelines In a medical context, guidelines are a series of suggestions, issued by official bodies, such as the Department of Health or by independent experts, for the conduct of medical practice. They include advice on the treatment of particular disorders or on effective ways of dealing with any clinical or human-relational problem. Guidelines are not prescriptive or directive, but doctors who fail to follow widely-recognized guidelines risk criticism and may even, in the event of poor outcomes be at risk of legal action. The practice of publishing guidelines, and of amending and updating them regularly, has grown steadily in recent years. |
