iatrogenic disease any illness caused by doctors or pathogenic medicine which, according to ILLICH (1975), operates on three levels: - clinical - the undesirable side effects of treatments administered to cure or exploit the patient or to protect the doctor from censure;
- social – where medical practice sponsors sickness by reinforcing a morbid society that encourages people to become consumers of curative, preventive, industrial and environmental medicine;
- health-denying- where the human potential to deal with vulnerability and weakness is eroded by reliance on medical solutions.
