a warm Atlantic current off the northeastern coast of South America, a branch of the South Equatorial Current. It has its beginning at Cape Sao Roque (Brazil) and travels toward the northwest along the Guiana coast until it joins the North Equatorial Current. The mean annual temperature of the water is 27° C, the salinity is 35.0-36.5 parts per thousand, and the velocity is more than 3 km/hr.
