Il’ichev, Aleksandr Semenovich

Born Mar. 31 (Apr. 12), 1898, in Moscow, died there Feb. 29, 1952. Soviet mining expert; corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1939), Honored Worker in Science and Technology of the RSFSR (1943). Became a member of the CPSU in 1944.

Il’ichev graduated from the Moscow Academy of Mines in 1925. In 1929 he became an assistant professor at the Moscow Mining Institute; in 1930 he became a professor, and in 1932, head of the subdepartment of mining mechanics. In 1939 he became the head of a department at the Mining Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. His primary work was on the automation of mine hoisting and pumping installations, calculation of the strength of steel cables, and methods of design of hoisting installations. He was awarded the Order of Lenin, three other orders, and medals.
