Guffey, Joseph F. (Frank)

(1870–1959) U.S. senator; born at Guffey's Landing, Pa. Entering the family business, he became president of several oil companies. A strong supporter of Woodrow Wilson, he financed Wilson's 1919 national speaking tour. Elected to the U.S. Senate (Dem., Pa.; 1935–47), he backed New Deal legislation and measures regulating the oil and coal industries, but he practiced machine politics when it came to the Democratic party in his home state.
