Gudermes

 

a city (a settlement until 1941) in the Chechen-Ingush ASSR, on the Sunzha River (tributary of the Terek), 36 km east of the city of Groznyï. Junction of railroad lines to Rostov-on-Don, Baku, Astrakhan, and Mozdok. Population, 32,000 (1970). Gudermes has enterprises of rail transportation, a medical instruments plant, a brick works, and a cannery producing fresh-frozen fruits and vegetables. A synthetic rubber plant is under construction (1971). The city also has a pedagogical school. Oil is extracted in the vicinity of Gudermes.
