Iashtukh

the name of Lower Paleolithic sites (early Acheulean and Mousterian cultures) not far from the village of Nizhnii lashtukh, near Sukhumi. The sites were discovered by S. N. Zamiatin and studied by him from 1934 to 1938; they were excavated by N. Z. Berdzenishvili from 1958 to 1960 and by I. I. Korobkov from 1961 to 1965. The cultural layer has not been preserved. Among the objects found were a number of primitive stone articles, including flakes, sometimes worked along the edges, cores, and choppers. lashtukh is one of the oldest sites of human habitation found in the USSR.
