Established: Designated as Adams Mansion National Historic Site on December 9, 1946; changed to Adams National Historic Site on November 26, 1952; redesignated Adams National Historical Park on November 2, 1998.
Location:In the City of Quincy, Massachusetts, approximately ten miles south of Boston. All tours begin at the Visitor Center which is located at 1250 Hancock Street in the Presidents Place Galleria.
Facilities:Museum/exhibit. Entrance fee required. A free trolley bus provides regularly scheduled shuttle service between the park visitor center and the historic homes.
Activities:Regularly scheduled tours of the historic homes (mid-April - mid-November), family-oriented special events program (throughout the year), and annual lecture series (last week in June).
Special Features:The site includes 11 historic structures detailing the lives of five generations of the Adams family (1720 to 1927), including two US Presidents and First Ladies, three US Ministers, historians, writers and family members. The main historic features include: John Adams Birthplace, where John Adams, the 2nd US President was born (1735), and the John Quincy Adams Birthplace, where his son, John Quincy Adams, 6th US President was born (1767); the "Old House," home to four generations of the Adams family; and the United First Parish Church, where both Presidents and the First Ladies are entombed in the Adams family crypt.
