Location:25 miles south of Charleston, South Carolina.
Facilities:Visitor center, hiking trails, observation towers, historic site.
Activities:Canoeing, kayaking, hiking, hunting, fishing.
Special Features:Refuge is part of 350,000-acre ACE Basin, one of the largest undeveloped wetland ecosystems remaining on the Atlantic coast. Its name comes for the three rivers that flow into the basin, the Ashepoo, Combahee, and Edisto rivers. Two separate units comprise refuge lands: one along the Edisto River and the other along the Combahee River. A historic antebellum plantation home in the Edisto River unit serves as refuge headquarters.
Habitats: 11,815 acres of wetlands, early successional fields, and wooded uplands. Plans call for eventually increasing total acreage to about 18,000 acres.
Access: Year round during daylight hours.
Wild life: American alligator, peregrine falcon, bald eagle, wood stork and other wading birds, waterfowl, deer.
