Grabau, Amadeus William

Born Jan. 9, 1870. in the state of Wisconsin, USA; died Mar. 1946. in Peking. American geologist.

Grabau graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1896 and Harvard University in 1900. He was a professor of paleontology and geology at several universities in the USA and, from 1919. in Peking (China). His major works dealt with the general principles of stratigraphy and the paleontological basis of a detailed stratigraphie scale for North America and China. Grabau developed the pulsation theory of the history of the earth, using it to explain the phenomena of transgression and regression.
