hepatitis delta A liver inflammation caused by a very small virus, hepatitis delta virus (HDV) that can reproduce only in the presence of the hepatitis B virus (HBV). This superinfection occurs in about 5 per cent of cases and consideravly worsens the outlook. HDV infection has caused serious epidemics and is endemic in the Mediterranean area.
