Hans Ahlmann

Ahlmann, Hans

 

Born Nov. 14, 1889, in Karlsborg. Swedish glaciologist and physical geographer. President of the International Geographical Union from 1956 to 1960.

Ahlmann took part in expeditions to Spitsbergen (1931, 1934), Iceland (1936–38), and Greenland (1939–40). He headed the Swedish section of the Anglo-Swedish-Norwegian antarctic expedition of 1949–52. He has visited the USSR many times. In 1960 he was awarded the grand medal of the Geographical Society of the USSR.
