Hungnam a city and port in the People’s Democratic Republic of Korea, in Hamgyong-namdo (South Hangyong Province), on Tongjoson Bay of the Sea of Japan. Population, 260,000 (1976). Administratively, Hungnam is part of the city of Hamhung. Hungnam manufactures food products, building materials, and such fertilizers as ammonium sulfate and superphosphate; aluminum is smelted. The city is a commercial fishing base. |
