GP IIb/IIIa inhibitors

Drugs that block the glycoprotein receptor sites on activated PLATELETS thereby preventing the binding of fibrinogen and other ligands to these sites. The result is an inhibition of platelet aggregation and the reduced tendency to form clots. These drugs are used to prevent heart attacks in patients with unstable ANGINA and to reduce the risk of blockage of coronary artery stents. Examples are abciximab (Reopro), eptifibatide (Integrilin) and tirofiban (Aggrastat).
