hocoid

hocoid

A term of art referring to a heart with gross features similar to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM)—e.g., marked increase in left ventricular mass and fibrosis, which lacks myocyte disarray, the confirmatory histologic feature of HCM. Hocoid hearts are seen in Afro-Caribbeans, athletes, and infants of diabetic mothers, and may develop in response to an increase in insulin-like growth factor.
The name derives from a pronunciation of HCM (HO cum), which begat an adjectival form for hocum-like—hocoid.
